The Green Line LRT is Calgary’s third [[light rail]] transit line, after the [[Blue Line LRT]] and [[Red Line LRT]].

As of 2024 the project has secured funding for a section between 4th Street SE and Shepherd. If completely funded, the Green Line will extend from North Pointe, through downtown, to Seton in SE Calgary.[1]

On July 30, 2024, City Council voted for a new phasing: Eau Claire to Lynnwood/Millican for a cost of 6.2 billion dollars. This move shortened the previous phasing by 6 stories, at an escalated cost, in exchange for a project that the City could manage with the funding already committed.[2]

On August 1, the Government of Alberta’s Transportation Minister Devin Dreeshen affirmed the Province’s commitment to funding the project, and said the City could “bank on it”. The Government of Alberta reversed this decision on September 3rd, withdrawing their funding agreement, citing an alternative proposal to avoid construction costs of tunnelling Downtown.[3]

On September 17, City Council voted to wind down the project, citing their risk and inability to proceed with the project given the Province’s withdrawal. Estimating the costs of ending contracts at $850 million, atop the $1.3 billion already spent on the project.[4]

On October 10, Transporation Minister Dreeshen and Mayor Gondek released a joint letter to the public, announcing that the Province agreed to re-commit their funding toward an adapted phasing from Stampede Park to Shepard. The Province also reaffirmed their decision to redesign the Downtown alignment to avoid tunelling.[5]
