In the spirit of truth, reconciliation, and reciprocity

We affirm Canada in the spirit of Kanata — our nation’s original Iroquoian-origin identity — the land of many villages — flexible, resilient, inclusive and connected.

We understand Calgary in the spirit of the Elbow — the common name for our city’s origin and region across various Indigenous language families through generations.

Moh’kinstsis — Wichispa — Guts’its’i — Otos-kwunee — Elbow — Confluence

A place of delicate transition between the Rockies and Praries — the place where the Bow and Elbow Rivers meet — Where foothills ripple far from their confluence through space, carved through deep time.

These lands are — as they have been for millennia of human habitation — a sacred gathering place where various glacial streams of water converge — Where life, from a diversity of backgrounds and perspectives, naturally collect in mutual embrace.

We connect, collaborate, and communicate on the ancestral territories of the Treaty 7 signatories — The Blackfoot Confederacy, including the Siksika, the Piikani, and the Kainai First Nations — The Iyarhe Nakoda, including the Chiniki, Bearspaw, and Goodstoney First Nations — and the Tsuut’ina First Nation.

We acknowledge all Indigenous people who have made these lands their home, including the Northwest Metis, whose people self-govern through the Otipemisiwak Métis Government, which is represented within the City of Calgary by Nose Hill Métis District 5 and Elbow Métis District 6.
