Publicly-owned street trees!

Shortform idea incoming!

During the Rezoning for Housing public hearing, many many people in opposition were concerned about the loss of privately-owned tree canopy upon the development of a rowhouse or townhouse.
This is a valid concern, however there is some solace in that publicly-owned street trees are a thing that exist in many inner-city neighbourhoods where R-CG redevelopment is happening, that are an opportune way to fill up wasteful space in the wide roads of newer suburbs, and that aren’t beholden to the whims of a private entity or individual wanting to redevelop their land.

I unfortunately don’t have the time to write this out or record it, but I thought I would put the idea out there for anyone interested.

Thanks for posting a lil sketcherino here, we love to see it.

I know @Catbread was looking at doing some design related shorts, this could be a great topic.

Many local roads are wayyyyyyy too wide as it is. Local streets should not be a place where it’s possible to drive quickly. They could easily lose a few metres to trees & sidewalk and still be navigable.

Using trees on the left of the sidewalk not only provide a canopy for the sidewalk, and the parking/bike lane, but act as big bollards too.

Hopefully we see some of this in the [[Street Manual]]. Perhaps we could work with the Climate Hub on this, given their [[Calgary Tree Equity]] research.
