Urbanism

Urbanism refers to the interrelation between the built form and inhabitants within a city.

It is used by urban enthusiasts or activists (often called “urbanists”) to describe their interest or study in this interrelation; the strength of this interrelation; or the specific means by which it is expressed in a given urban environment.

“Compared to North American urbanism, European urbanism is defined by denser urban centres, more substantive public transit and mobility infrastructure, and public housing.”

The term is often used to describe the field or practice of urban planning.
