About Unsprawling

unsprawling

/ən’sprɑːlɪŋ/ gerund

  1. the process of refocusing a city’s built-form, and repairing its urban fabric from the detriments of urban sprawl, including:
    • enabling and prioritizing the prosperity, and sustainability of urban spaces.
    • creating and strengthening connections between these spaces, and their people.
    • consolidating decentralized human creativity, by embracing, representing, and encouraging complexity.
  2. the act of coming together, to enact (through direct action) or encourage (through public advocacy) the social, physical, economic, and political processes of unsprawling

We are a media production collective, of Calgarians dedicated to unsprawling the city we love.

Examining our built environment, the ways we move around it, how we connect within it; and imagining better.

Communicating the ideas and actions of Calgarians, through informative, collaborative media.

As a means of bringing urban activists, organizations, the public, and the decision-makers of local government closer together — geographically, politically, and socially.

Our Mission

Unsprawling produces media that aim to empower positive civic engagement in Calgary. Platforming local perspectives of local situations to better connect, collaborate, and communicate in the process of refocusing our city.

Our Vision

Unsprawling pursues a more productive, resilient, vibrant, and accessible Calgary; comprised of, and built by more informed, engaged, and activated Calgarians. We imagine a more interconnected urban form and fabric — geographical, political, and social.

Our Values

Positivity — Unsprawling is defined and inspired by the values we share; the Calgary we want to see; and the actions we articulate — we are committed to working toward, rather than against.

Generosity — Calgarians deserve transparent, accurate, and high-quality information about their city and communities — which invites and empowers them as an integral part of civic life.

Actionability — We are committed to enabling and encouraging the participation of Calgarians in co-creating our city, and our organization — communicating opportunities to connect, engage, and take action.

Locality — Unsprawling focuses on empowering the perspectives of Calgarians, as they relate to municipal issues impacting other Calgarians — we foster a sense of civic pride, built on appreciation of local governance, contexts, and situations.

Our People

Unsprawling is a grassroots, volunteer-led, collective of organizations, urban activists, journalists, community-builders, artists, storytellers, educators, changemakers, etc.; and above all, Calgarians.

We are a collective of passionate Calgarians—not necessarily experts—who make things happen by combining our skills, knowledge, and efforts toward a common goal.

Together, each new perspective only strengthens and intensifies our movement. We are actively committed to supporting and amplifying Calgarians’ initiatives and perspectives.

We welcome you, your community, your ideas, organizations, events, rallies, perspectives, and creative projects. Let’s talk about how to do it better together!
