About the Unsprawling Forum
Main article: Welcome to the Unsprawling Forum!
Where Calgary’s urban activists come to connect, collaborate, and communicate.
This is Unsprawling’s public-facing conversation platform that we created to bring urban activists together, and bring their diverse perspectives to the public. Advocacy communities are often difficult to find, or consistently interact with — separated into private chatrooms.
Like little suburban neighbourhoods — these places are disconnected, unsustainable, and undiscoverable — think of the Forum like a virtual downtown!
Designed to encourage the cross-pollination of diverse backgrounds and perspectives toward more informed, engaged, and activated Calgarians.
About Unsprawling
Main article: About Unsprawling
unsprawling
/ən’sprɑːlɪŋ/ gerund
- the process of refocusing a city’s built-form, and repairing its urban fabric from the detriments of urban sprawl.
- enabling and prioritizing the prosperity, and sustainability of urban spaces.
- creating and strengthening connections between these spaces, and their people.
- consolidating human assets, without centralizing them, by embracing, representing, and encouraging complexity.
- the radical act of coming together, to enact (through direct action) or encourage (through public advocacy) the social, physical, economic, and political process of unsprawling
Unsprawling
/ən’sprɑːlɪŋ/ noun
- a Calgary-based collective of citizens who believe their city is in desperate need of unsprawling, and are dedicated to encouraging it.
Unsprawling should not be confused with The Sprawl—though our platforms accommodate them, and many of our members support them!
Our Mission
Unsprawling empowers a diversity of Calgarians to connect, collaborate, and communicate in the process of refocusing our city. We develop multimedia platforms to strengthen civic engagement between urban activists, organizations, and the public.
Our Vision
Unsprawling pursues a more productive, sustainable, safe, and inclusive Calgary, comprised of more informed, engaged, and activated Calgarians. We imagine an urban form and fabric—physical, social, economic, and political—that encourages and fosters co-creative ownership and stewardship.
Our People
Unsprawling is a grassroots, volunteer-led, collective of organizations, urban activists, journalists, community-builders, artists, storytellers, educators, changemakers, etc.; and above all, Calgarians.
We are a collective of passionate Calgarians—not necessarily experts—who make things happen by combining our skills, knowledge, and efforts toward a common goal.
Together, each new perspective only strengthens and intensifies our movement. We are actively committed to supporting and amplifying Calgarians’ initiatives and perspectives.
We welcome you, your community, your ideas, organizations, events, rallies, perspectives, and creative projects. Let’s talk about how to do it better together!
